The second generation Charger LX began production in the 2011 model year with changes inside and out. The sheet metal on the hood has a new look along with the redesigned front fascia and the addition behind of the “racetrack” style tail lights giving the car a bit of a retro look. However the new look is much more pleasing and completed by losing the plastic wheel covers and replacing them with a set of chromed aluminum ones.

Power for 2011 has a basic offer of the newer and larger Pentastar 3.61L-V6 engine coupled to the five speed automatic transmission will produce 292 hp (218 kW) with 395 lb-ft (353 N-m) of torque. You can kick that up a notch and get the 5.7L-V8 which offers 370 hp (276 kW) and delivers 395 lb-ft (536 N-m) of torque. But the big-meal-deal for 2011 is a new 6.4L –V8 engine in the SRT-8 version developing 470 hp (350 kW) and offers 470 lb-ft (640 N-m) of torque with this technological gem doing 0-60 (97 km/h) in 4.3 seconds and does the standing quarter in 12.2 seconds reaching 110 mph (180 km/h) in the process. The Charger is built on the same platform as the Chrysler 300. Both the large engine offer and the Pentastar entry level model deliver the same results as their Chrysler 300 counterparts.

Chicago Motor Show in 2011 sees the unveiling of the 2012 Charger in the SRT-8 version sporting the Dodge emblem in the grill and the vehicle will still be produced on the Chrysler 300 platform. The car has had no major changes however other than the new eight speed transmission offering for the Pentastar entry level model giving a bit more getup and go with decreased fuel consumption-increasing range by about 4 mpg (8 km/h) which do make a more attractive package.

All wheel drive is an offer for the 2013 model year and I suspect that a decrease in gas millage comes along with that as well. If you need the all wheel drive for traction in the snow and faster get away from the light then this is a great feature but you can likely expect to pay more at the pump or at least stop more often for fuel. Powered by the 5.7 Liter Hemi the SRT-8 you can get about 25/23 mpg city/highway if you are light footed but if you like to tromp it like I do then possibly the Pentastar is the best choice to save some cash. When you compare power and roominess to other choices from the import market such as BMW at 65 thousand or even comparable Ford offer at 39 thousand the Charger  at $30,000.00 is a good deal even if the interior lacks some of the goodies of the other competitors.

The 2014 Dodge Charger SRT-8 looks challenging-like it is ready to race right now-a “try me-if you dare” attitude is in the air. This is a very fast fun to drive car has very good braking, and is basically well equipped with lots of safety features. Although if you are reading this you may be more interested in how fast the car can go as opposed to how safe you will be at maximum velocity.

The STR-8 is the biggest and fastest offer for 2014 with the 6.4 Liter V8 developing 470 hp and producing 470 ft-lb torque bolted to the five speed automatic can do 0-60 (97 km/h) in 4.6 seconds but only offers 14/23 city/highway if you are light footed.
