“This is the 1970 chevelle I restored with my dad and grampa. Originally a 396 car in astro blue with 3 speed auto (column shift). My grandfather brought it from Arizona in the late 80s, and my dad bought it off him shortly after. He began restoring the car but in 1991 he was injured at work and was forced to sell the car back to my grandfather. It sat outdoors in northwest Indiana from 1991 through 2012. ” “I was able to convince my grandfather in 2012 to help me restore the car. He agreed, and said if I put in the work and paid for the parts he would give me the car. Together we replaced the fenders, quarter panels, front and back windshields, both bumpers, and the majority of the interior. ” “The 396 the car originally had was sold to another chevelle owner years ago, and so we pulled a 350 sbc connected to a th350 out of a 70s suburban and dropped it in the car. After a few days of tuning we got it running great. We also converted to a B&M 3 speed floor shifter. The radiator, master cylinder, power brake booster, heater core, gauge cluster, dash pad, and head liner were all replaced as well.” “Needless to say, after 20 years of being exposed to Indiana weather the body was in poor shape. There was considerable hail and rust damage to most of the sheet metal. The only original sheet metal we were able to save were the door skins, hood, roof and trunk lid after plenty of body work. ” “After getting the body straight (which was the longest part of the 2 year restoration) we painted the car ourselves with period correct Cranberry red paint in acrylic enamel. Of course I went with the black racing stripes as well. I had to get the paint specially mixed to match the proper gm paint code. Finally we sprayed the car, and after clear coat with days of buffing and sanding our restoration was finally complete. The car is a family build with sentimental value that makes it priceless to me. It will be in my family forever if I can help it.” “My future plans are to finish with the interior restoration. Right now it’s in acceptable condition, but I’d like to get proper reproduction interior paneling, bucket seats, console, and the horseshoe style shifter. Additionally, I plan to replace the 350 with a 4 bolt main 454 we have that needs rebuilt. A new transmission to match up to the 454 would be ideal as well. After that I plan to replace all factory wiring with new harnesses to eliminate some electrical hiccups.”
“The car has a 3.42 12 bolt rear end, and we restored the suspension with new A arms, shocks and big block springs. Magnaflow exhaust.”
“I got the original 1970 ss wheels from a gentleman whose shed had been undermined by ground hogs. The floor had caved in under the wheels, and I had to dig them out from 6 feet of dirt to retrieve them. We then sandblasted, repaired, and painted them ourselves.”
